Custom Properties Assignment to Event Objects by Add-In

This article describes custom properties and their main function and clarifies the process of custom properties assignment to events while saving them to SAP Cloud for Customer via Add‑In.

What are custom properties?

Custom properties represent data that contain information about SAP objects (Contacts, Accounts, Opportunities, etc.) linked to an event in Add-In. Then, SSI synchronization uses this data to link the event to the corresponding objects on SAP Cloud for Customer side during the next sync session.

In a workflow, when a user saves a not yet synced event to SAP objects (links to SAP objects), Add‑In adds the SAP category and assigns custom properties to the event. As a confirmation, Add-In will show the corresponding message:

“This item will be saved to SAP at the next synchronization. Please save and close it before synchronization so that the item is linked to selected objects.”

Assigning custom properties to events

Appointment – Save & Close

Once the appointment is saved via Add-In, you must click Save & Close to ensure that the assigned custom properties are saved by Outlook.

Otherwise, Outlook would not save the assigned custom properties to the event, although the SAP category is assigned.

As a result, SSI saves the appointment to SAP Cloud for Customer without linked SAP objects. This is expected Microsoft behavior when you do not click Save & Close.

Meeting organizer – Send or Send Update

There are Send or Send Update buttons in Outlook when you are a meeting organizer:

  • For a new meeting, Outlook will save custom properties to the event once you click Send to send out the invitation

  • For an existing meeting, you may click Send Update or just close the meeting window (if you do not want to send an additional invite), and Outlook will save the custom properties to the event in both cases

Meeting attendee – Invitation

There is no dedicated Save & Close, Send, or Send Update buttons when you deal with a meeting invitation as an attendee.

Therefore, once the event is saved via Add-In, you must close the meeting window to ensure that the assigned custom properties are saved by Outlook.

Clicking only the Save icon does not guarantee successful custom properties saving results.
